Do you have a shrub in your garden that brings absolute joy when it’s in bud and then in flower. For the Little Cellar Rat is has to be RAPHIOLEPIS or INDIAN HAWTHORN. You wait in anticipation as the myriad of buds appear then for the full flowers to come. They look like mature apple or peach blossoms and they bring absolutely joy to the Heart! They come in White and Pink varieties…. TLCR has a white one that seems to have a spur of the pink. How fortunate!

If you’re motoring around our district at present, keep an eye out for locos/ cane trains carrying harvested cane to Isis Central Mill. The countryside is an ever changing scene with fields taking on a cleanly shaven look as the sweet grass is cut for another year, leaving a distinct aroma of sweet brown sugar and molasses in the air.

If you’re not motoring around the district, put that oven to work. Throw some chunks of sweet potato, capsicum and eggplant in the oven, crank the heat up and enjoy that caramelisation process filling the kitchen with a delicious aroma.
Make them the basis of a warm vegetarian winter salad. Splash on some aged balsamic for the acid contribution, S and P , crumbled feta and toasted walnuts. buon appetito!
